Inferior Vena Cava Filter Placement and Removal

The inferior vena cava is the main vein draining blood back to the heart from the lower extremities and abdominal cavity. These filters are designed to prevent clots from traveling to the lung. Usually blood clots are treated with blood thinning medications; however, certain medical conditions may prevent patients from being on blood thinning agents. In these circumstances a filter can be placed to decrease the chance of blood clots traveling from the legs to the lungs. A blood clot in the lung is called a Pulmonary Embolism.
